The story follows a Guild expedition into the unexplored Forbidden Lands after a rescued boy named Nata tells of a mysterious monster that attacked his village. As you investigate, you’ll meet a cast of companions who join the hunt.

Environments in the Forbidden Lands shift dramatically with the seasons and weather. During harsh Fallow and Inclemency periods, monsters roam in packs and the land becomes perilous, while Plenty periods bring rich wildlife and abundant resources.

Monsters have adapted to these dynamic ecosystems and display unique behaviors and attacks. Hunters must evolve tactics, choose from a variety of weapons and armor, and use new moves, abilities, and equipment to succeed.

Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the game introduces notable characters — including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, and smithy Gemma — and supports cooperative play: join up to three other players across platforms or call on story characters as Support Hunter NPCs.
